GST Registration Modification

Understanding GST Registration Modification

GST registration modification refers to the process of updating or amending the details furnished during the initial GST registration. Businesses may need to modify their GST registration due to changes in business information, such as a change in business name, address, or the addition of new business premises. Timely and accurate updates ensure compliance with GST laws and maintain the accuracy of taxpayer information on the GST portal.

Types of Amendments

Amendments to GST registration are categorized into two types:

  1. Core Field Amendments:
    • Business Details: Changes to the legal name of the business (without a change in PAN) or principal place of business.
    • Stakeholder Information: Addition or removal of stakeholders such as partners, directors, or authorized signatories.
    • Principal Place of Business: Modifications to the address of the primary business location.
  2. Non-Core Field Amendments:
    • Contact Information: Updates to email addresses or phone numbers.
    • Bank Account Details: Adding or updating bank account information.
    • Additional Places of Business: Adding or modifying information about additional business locations.
    • Goods and Services Details: Changes in the description of goods and services or HSN/SAC codes.

Procedure for Modifying GST Registration

  1. Access the GST Portal: Log in to the GST Portal using your credentials.
  2. Navigate to Amendment Section:
    • For Core Field Amendments: Go to 'Services' > 'Registration' > 'Amendment of Registration Core Fields'.
    • For Non-Core Field Amendments: Go to 'Services' > 'Registration' > 'Amendment of Registration Non-Core Fields'.
  3. Select the Relevant Tab: Choose the section that requires modification, such as Business Details, Promoter/Partners, Principal Place of Business, etc.
  4. Update Information: Make the necessary changes in the selected section. Ensure all information is accurate and up-to-date.
  5. Upload Supporting Documents: Attach required documents supporting the changes, such as proof of address for a change in business location or a resolution for a change in authorized signatory.
  6. Provide Reason for Amendment: Clearly state the reason for the modification in the designated field.
  7. Verification and Submission: Verify the details and submit the application using a Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) or Electronic Verification Code (EVC), as applicable.
  8. Acknowledgment: Upon successful submission, an Application Reference Number (ARN) will be generated. This can be used to track the status of the amendment application.

Documents Required for GST Registration Modification

  • Proof of Change: Documents evidencing the change, such as a business name change certificate, new address proof, or updated partnership deed.
  • Authorization Documents: If adding a new authorized signatory, provide a letter of authorization or board resolution.
  • Identity and Address Proof: For new stakeholders or authorized signatories, submit PAN, Aadhaar, passport, or other valid ID and address proofs.
  • Proof of Principal/Additional Place of Business: Documents like property tax receipts, rent/lease agreements, electricity bills, or consent letters from the property owner.

Important Considerations

  • Timely Submission: File the amendment application within 15 days of the change. Delayed submissions may lead to non-compliance issues.
  • Approval Process:
    • Core Field Amendments: These require approval from the tax authorities. The application is usually processed within 15 working days.
    • Non-Core Field Amendments: These are auto-approved upon submission and do not require manual intervention.
  • No Changes to PAN or State: Changes involving a different PAN or a shift to another state necessitate a new GST registration, as GSTINs are PAN and state-specific.
  • Track Application Status: Use the ARN to monitor the status of your amendment application on the GST portal.
